What Happens During the Visit

🌸 What can I expect during the appointment?

One of our vets will come to your home within the Greater Brisbane Region, where your pet feels safe, comfortable, and surrounded by the people who love them. We move at your pace and guide you gently through each step.

Your vet will take time to explain the process in as much or as little detail as you prefer, answering any questions and adapting to your family's needs. There is no rush. This is your time to say goodbye in a way that feels personal, dignified, and meaningful.

In most cases, a gentle sedative is given first. This allows your pet to relax completely and drift into a deep, peaceful sleep in your arms or in their favourite resting place. Once they are fully settled and you feel ready, the final medication is administered intravenously, allowing them to pass quietly and painlessly.

You will always be given time and privacy with your pet afterwards.

If you have chosen aftercare and cremation, your vet will carefully and respectfully transfer your pet from your home. If you prefer to organise your own aftercare or have arranged a home burial, your pet will remain in your loving care.

🌿 How do I prepare my home for a euthanasia visit?

We strive to make your pet's final moments as calm, safe, and comfortable as possible in the place they know and love best.

❤️ Choose a comfortable spot.

Pick a space where your pet usually feels safe and relaxed. Pets are often most comfortable on the floor, their bed or couch, though some cats prefer a higher spot. There is no need for anything clinical or to place them on a table. We bring everything we need. Include their favourite toys, blankets, or anything that helps them feel at ease.

🧡 Temperature and shelter.

On hot days, indoors with air conditioning often tends to work best. In cooler weather, a sunny or shaded backyard or quiet outdoor spot can be lovely if your pet feels comfortable and safe there.

💛 Comfort for your pet and family.

Soft, thick bedding for your pet and cushions or chairs for family members who want to sit close can make a real difference. Creating a warm, calm environment helps everyone feel more at ease.

💚 Privacy and safety.

Choose a private space away from interruptions. Make sure your pet cannot escape, especially if they are cautious or easily startled.

💙 Hygiene.

Some pets may urinate or defecate after sedation. Protecting carpets or rugs with towels or blankets can make things easier and reduce stress for everyone.

💜 Sounds.

Reduce loud noises where possible. Playing gentle, calming music can help create a peaceful atmosphere.

🩷 Emotional preparation.

It is completely natural to feel a wide range of emotions during this time. Sadness, anxiety, guilt, relief, numbness, love, and moments of calm can all be present at once. Everyone reacts differently and all feelings are valid. There is no right or wrong way to feel or to say farewell. It is your moment to honour your pet and the bond you share.

🌼 How long does a home euthanasia appointment take?

Appointments are typically 45 to 60 minutes, though we never rush. Every family is different, and we allow as much time as you need to say goodbye in your own way.

🌺 Can family and other pets be present?

Absolutely. Family members and other pets are welcome to be present throughout the appointment. We work at your pace and within your home, ensuring your pet is surrounded by love and comfort in their final moments.

A few things to consider: pets with more excitable or anxious temperaments may find it helpful to come and go as needed rather than being present for the entire appointment. Many families find their other pets settle naturally as the appointment progresses, often choosing to lie quietly nearby. Allowing other pets to be present, or to gently say goodbye afterwards, can sometimes support their own understanding and reduce searching behaviours in the days that follow.

The same flexibility applies to children. We take time to gently explain the process to kids of all ages, answer their questions, and give them space to say goodbye in their own way. Children can be encouraged to write a letter or draw a picture for their pet, which can be respectfully cremated with them if they wish. Ultimately, as many family members and pets as your beloved companion feels comfortable with are welcome. Our goal is always a peaceful, loving environment tailored to your family.

🫶 Special Treats & Forbidden Foods Before the Appointment

Many families choose to spoil their beloved pet with special treats in the lead up to the appointment, and we think that is a wonderful idea. This is their time to be celebrated and indulged.

If you are considering giving normally forbidden treats such as chocolate, ice cream, or rich human foods, there are a few things worth keeping in mind.

Fatty or rich foods can sometimes cause nausea, which may affect how settled your pet feels during the appointment. With this in mind, it is generally recommended to offer these kinds of treats closer to the appointment time, just before or after the vet arrives, rather than in the hours leading up to it.

For more ideas on how to make your pet's last meal special, we have put together a guide for dogs and cats.

Costs, Booking & Medications

🏡 How much does gentle home pet euthanasia cost?

Weekday appointments during business hours (8am to 5pm): $449 Weekend, public holiday, and after-hours appointments: $559

Travel surcharges may apply to regions outside our usual service area of Greater Brisbane Region. There is no travel fee for families living in our typical service area of Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Logan & Redland Bay. Please visit our pricing page for full details.

💗 How do I book an appointment?

You can book in whatever way feels easiest for you.

Online booking is available through our website. If you would prefer to speak with someone, please call . And if you do not feel up to a phone call, you are welcome to send an enquiry and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Please note that responses may be delayed if we are in an appointment or outside business hours. If your situation is urgent, please contact or present to your nearest emergency veterinary hospital.

💊 Should I keep giving my pet's medication before the appointment?

In most cases yes. It is generally recommended to continue giving medications, particularly those for pain relief, nausea, heart conditions, or prednisone, as directed by your vet. Some medications can be reduced or discontinued to ease pill burden and reduce discomfort, but this depends on your pet's individual situation.

Please reach out to us and Dr Emma can guide you through what to continue and what can be safely stopped.

🌱 When Will I Receive My Invoice?

We typically send invoices a couple of days after the appointment. We do this intentionally, because we understand how deeply emotional this time is and we want you to be fully present with your beloved pet on the day, without any administration to think about.

That said, we understand that some people prefer to have things settled in advance so they do not have to think about it afterwards. We completely honour that. If you would like to pay before or on the day, simply let us know and we can arrange that for you.

Bank transfer is our preferred payment method as it is fee-free for you. If you would prefer to pay by credit card, please let us know and we can send you a secure payment link. Please note that a card processing fee applies to credit card payments.

Changes, Cancellations & Special Cases

❤️ What if my pet passes away before the vet arrives?

First of all, we are so sorry. We know how devastating this can be, and we want you to know that we are here to help you through it in whatever way we can.

Please reach out to us as soon as you are able to, so we can let the attending vet know and help guide you through the next steps. You do not need to have everything figured out. Just let us know and we will take it from there.

If you had arranged a cremation package with us, we can still take care of everything on your behalf, transferring your beloved pet with all the gentleness and dignity they deserve and making all the cremation arrangements for you. Please note that an aftercare transfer fee applies in place of the pet euthanasia cost.

In terms of your appointment cost, if you were able to give us more than four hours notice, you will receive a full refund. If your pet passed within four hours of the appointment time,

Please know that we will handle all of this with as much care and sensitivity as we can. You do not have to navigate it alone.

🐾 What is your cancellation and refund policy?

We completely understand that circumstances can change, sometimes very suddenly, and we will always do our best to support you through that.

If you need to cancel your appointment with more than four hours notice, you will receive a full refund.

If you need to cancel with less than four hours notice, a partial refund applies and a $99 fee is retained. This covers administrative costs and the vet's time, as well as the possibility that the appointment could have been offered to another family in need during that time.

Please reach out to us as soon as you can and we will take care of everything from there.

💓 Do you offer appointments for fearful or aggressive pets?

Yes. We are experienced in caring for anxious and reactive cats and dogs, and every pet is met with the same gentle, patient, and loving approach. If you let us know in advance, we will set aside extra time and approach the visit slowly and thoughtfully, keeping the experience as calm and fear-free as possible for your pet and for you. There is no additional fee applied for anxious, fearful or aggressive pets.

Every family and every pet is different. If you have questions that are not covered here, please reach out anytime. We are here to help in whatever way we can.
