🌿 Preparing Your Home for a Peaceful Goodbye
There is no perfect way to prepare, only what feels right for your cat.
A favourite resting place Think about where your cat already feels safe and relaxed. A favourite sunny spot, their/your bed, the couch, or a soft blanket nest are all beautiful choices. This can be inside or outside, whichever place your kitty truly loves.
If you choose outside A sunny or shaded garden spot can be lovely for a cat who loves the outdoors, but a few things are worth thinking through beforehand:
External noise- Lawnmowers, traffic, or neighbourhood dogs can be unsettling, so try to choose a quiet time of day
Privacy from neighbours- A shaded, screened corner of the garden can help the visit feel private and undisturbed
Safety- Ensure sure your cat cannot wander off or hide away, as sedation can sometimes make cats want to explore before they settle
Comfort for family Have cushions or low seating nearby so you can sit close to your cat the whole time. There's no need for a table, and if your cat loves height, a favourite cat tree, windowsill, or elevated basket is just as lovely. We simply meet your cat wherever they are comfiest.
A calm environment Soft lighting, gentle voices, and minimal noise all help create a peaceful atmosphere. Favourite treats are always welcome nearby, in case your kitty feels like a little nibble along the way.
Hygiene After sedation or passing, cats may toilet themselves. Placing a towel or absorbent bedding underneath can ease this worry in the moment, so you can stay focused on your family instead.
🐾 Should Other Pets Be Present?
There is no single right answer here, only what feels right for your family.
Some families find comfort in having other pets present for part or all of the visit. For others, it can feel like too much, especially if another pet is anxious, vocal, or unsettled by change, and this can take away from your precious time with your kitty rather than add to it.
A few gentle options to consider:
Other pets can come and go throughout the visit
Other pets can be present for the entire visit
Other pets can be present just at the start and/or the end
Other pets can be brought in afterward, to see and gently sniff your cherished cat once they have passed, to enable them to have closure and to understand
Allowing other pets this gentle goodbye can help reduce searching behaviour afterward and support their own adjustment to the loss.
If barking, pacing, or stress from other pets feels like it might disrupt the calm you're hoping for, it's okay to keep them separate during the appointment itself. We are always happy to talk this through with you beforehand and adjust and be flexible as we go along.

Involving children is just as personal, and every child and every family is different.
Consider your child's age, personality, and any past experience with loss. Children may:
Be present for the full appointment
Be present for sedation, then step away
Come and go as they need to
Say their own goodbye beforehand, in their own way
If children will be present, a little gentle, honest preparation beforehand can make a real difference to how they experience the day.
👥 Other Family Members and Guests
Your kitty's comfort can guides how many people are present. As many family members or loved ones can be there as you and your cat would feel calm and at ease with, whether that's a full house or a quiet one on one moment.
If a larger gathering might feel like too much, family and friends can to come and go, or to spend their own quiet moment with your cat before or after the appointment.
🌸 What Happens During In-Home Cat Euthanasia?
Knowing what to expect can ease a lot of the worry beforehand.
1. Gentle Sedation Most cats receive a sedative first. They then become deeply relaxed and sleepy, drifting into a peaceful rest while you sit close by. An intravenous catheter is typically placed once they are settled and asleep.
2. Final Medication When you are ready, the final medication is given gently through the cannula. It works softly and painlessly.
There is no rush. We move entirely at kitty's pace, and yours.
3. Aftercare Options If you choose pet cremation, we arrange a respectful transfer. If you prefer home burial, we guide you gently through this too.
