Understanding Dog Dementia: Signs to Watch For in Your Beloved Companion

By Love & Toe Beans - Gentle In-Home Pet Euthanasia, Pet Cremation, Pet Quality of Life, Pet Grief Support- Brisbane & the Greater Brisbane Region

As our dogs grow older, they may slow down a little and that’s to be expected. But when changes in behaviour, memory, or routine start to emerge, it could be something more than normal ageing. Just like people, dogs can experience cognitive decline, known as canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD), or simply dog dementia.

At Love & Toe Beans, we provide warm, compassionate in-home pet care, end-of-life support, and euthanasia services for dogs and cats across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, Redland Bay, and the Greater Brisbane region. We know how difficult it is to see your best friend change and we're here to help you understand, support, and care for them every step of the way.

What Is Dog Dementia?

Dog dementia is a progressive neurological condition, similar to dementia in humans- that affects your dog’s ability to remember, process, and respond to the world around them. It can cause confusion, anxiety, and disconnection, which can be heartbreaking to witness.

While there’s no cure, understanding the signs can help you adapt your care and ensure your dog continues to feel safe, supported, and deeply loved in their senior years.

Common Signs of Dog Dementia

Every dog is different, but here are some of the more common behaviours that may indicate cognitive decline:

🧭 Disorientation

  • Appearing lost in familiar places (even the home or backyard)

  • Getting stuck behind furniture or even in corners

  • Staring blankly at walls or into space

🐾 Changes in Social Interaction

  • Becoming withdrawn or less interested in affection

  • Ignoring cues or familiar voices

  • Loss of enthusiasm for play, walks, or visitors

🌙 Sleep-Wake Cycle Disruption

  • Restlessness or pacing at night

  • Sleeping more during the day

  • Waking frequently or acting unsettled overnight

🧻 House Soiling or Toilet Accidents

  • Forgetting housetraining routines

  • Accidents in areas they’ve never toileted before

  • Changes in their communication techniques and confusion about how to signal their needs

🔁 Changes in Activity

  • Lethargy or reduced motivation

  • Repetitive behaviours like pacing or circling

  • Seeming "disconnected" from daily routines

😢 Anxiety, Vocalisation & Distress

  • Barking, whining, or howling without clear triggers

  • Appearing anxious or unsettled, especially when alone

  • Clinginess or increased need for reassurance

What Should You Do If You Suspect Dog Dementia?

If your dog is showing these signs, the first step is to speak with your veterinarian. Other medical conditions, such as arthritis, sensory loss, or liver or kidney disease, can mimic or contribute to these symptoms. There are medications that you can speak to your vet about such as Selegiline, Pregabalin and/or CBD oil that can be administerd to help pets with dementia settle through the night.

At Love & Toe Beans, we offer quality of life consultations in the comfort of your home. We help you understand your dog’s changing needs and guide you in making informed, loving decisions with empathy and care.

Supporting a Dog Living with Dementia

Though dementia can’t be reversed, there are many ways to support your dog as they navigate this stage of life:

  • Stick to a consistent daily routine

  • Keep furniture and food bowls in familiar places

  • Keep up with regular and gentle exercise

  • Use nightlights to help reduce nighttime confusion

  • Offer calming enrichment and simple toys

  • Speak softly and offer frequent affection

  • Ensure they have safe, quiet resting areas

  • Consider dietary supplements such as omega 3 and special diets for aging pets

  • Most importantly: be patient. They may not understand their world changing, but they’ll feel your love every moment.

When Quality of Life Declines

There may come a time when your dog no longer finds joy, peace, or comfort despite your best efforts. These moments can be some of the hardest you’ll ever face, but you don’t have to do it alone.

We offer Quality of Life Consultations & gentle in-home pet euthanasia across Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, and Redlands, so your dog can say goodbye in the place they feel safest, your loving home. We also provide pet cremation services and grief support for those navigating this incredibly emotional time.
