🐾 About Love & Toe Beans: Our Name, Our Approach, and Why We Do What We Do

Love & Toe Beans | Gentle In-Home Pet Euthanasia | Greater Brisbane Region

Every business has a story. Ours started with heartbreak, love, and a quiet conviction that there had to be a gentler way to say goodbye. This blog is a little window into who we are, why we chose this work, and what drives us to show up for families across Brisbane, Logan, Redland Bay, Ipswich and Moreton Bay every single day.

🧡 Why is it Called Love & Toe Beans?

For those who have not come across the term before, toe beans are the soft, squishy little paw pads on a dog or cat's feet. When you look at them from underneath, they really do resemble tiny little beans. Cute, squishy, and full of character.

We wanted a name that captured the warmth, love, and joy that pets bring into our lives, while also reflecting the gentle and caring approach we take in everything we do.

Love & Toe Beans felt just right. A name from the heart that celebrates the small, everyday details that make our pets so incredibly special. It is a reminder that our work is all about love, care, and the little things that make a big difference to our furry family members. 🐾

💛 What is Fear Free and Why Does It Matter?

Saying goodbye is emotional enough without adding unnecessary stress or anxiety for your pet. As a Fear Free Certified Vet, Emma approaches every visit with your pet's emotional wellbeing at the centre of everything she does. This means moving at their pace, using calm and gentle handling, reading their body language, and creating a quiet and unhurried environment where they feel safe. The euthanasia protocol itself is thoughtfully designed with a fear-free approach. Sedation is given first to allow your pet to relax fully and drift into a deep and comfortable sleep before the final medication is administered. Every step is intentional, to minimise fear, prevent distress, and ensure a gentle and peaceful transition.Small details matter. Softened voices, thoughtful positioning, allowing your pet to remain in their favourite spot, and never rushing. Our aim is to reduce fear, minimise discomfort, and ensure your pet's final moments are calm, dignified, and surrounded by love, because a peaceful goodbye is one last gift we can give. 🐾

🌈 Why Am I a Euthanasia Vet?

By Dr Emma 💛

This work found me through both heartbreak and love.

In my years working in emergency and critical care, I saw many families say goodbye under fluorescent lights, in rushed and overwhelming circumstances. Despite our best efforts, it is incredibly hard to soften the intensity of a hospital environment when time is short and emotions are raw. I often felt there had to be a gentler way.

Then in 2022, we faced the loss of our own beloved dog. We were able to help him pass at home, in his favourite place, calmly and surrounded by love. There was no urgency, no harsh lighting, no fear. Just quiet words, familiar smells, and hands resting gently on fur.

It was devastating and it was also beautiful.

That experience shaped the heart of Love & Toe Beans and our commitment to providing peaceful in-home pet euthanasia.

Choosing euthanasia for a beloved dog or cat is one of the heaviest decisions a guardian will ever make. It carries grief, doubt, love, and an overwhelming desire to do what is kindest. My role is to walk beside families with honesty, steadiness, and compassion, creating space for a goodbye that honours a life deeply loved.

I have come to see death and grief not as something to be feared or rushed through, but as something tender and real. Grief is love with nowhere to go, and there is a quiet beauty in that, if we allow ourselves to sit with it.

These moments hold profound sadness, but they also hold devotion, gratitude, and extraordinary love.

To be trusted to relieve the suffering of our dearest friends, those who gave us their entire hearts, is something I hold with great care. It is a privilege to be invited into that space and it is a privilege to be able to offer them this final gift of peace.

It is the most meaningful part of my career and I am deeply honoured to do it.

How do you do this work? Isn't it always so sad?

It is a question we are asked often, and it is a fair one.

We find that sadness is something we and others experience but there are so many meaningful emotions that come with grief and loss and lives lived. For us, it is also meaningful, and grounding, and an expression of deep love. For both of us, it is deeply personal.

From Nigel, (Aftercare Coordinator ) 💛

The loss of our dog Broccoli was devastating and life changing. He was my best friend, my furry soulmate and our fur baby. He travelled through so much of life with us, the highs and the lows, the ordinary and the extraordinary. Losing him crushed me, but when Em and I decided to start Love and Toe Beans, with intention I shifted the way I see death, loss and grief, not as something to turn away from, but as something to sit with gently and with care. I am so grateful to share in others’ experiences and it has helped me immensely.

This role has helped me move through my own grief and has given me a sense of purpose. There is meaning in being able to help relieve and prevent the suffering of animals we love, and in supporting the families who love them. If I can be even a small source of comfort during one of the hardest times a family may face, that matters to me.

When I collect a loved pet and make arrangements for their cremation, I am mindful of who they were and what they meant. I take pride in maintaining the highest possible standards when returning ashes, because these are not just ashes, they are someone's whole world.
